AUGUST 2009 NEWSLETTER

RAW NEWS

The last few months have been an exciting whirl of activity. As many of you already know after months (in fact years) of gestation we finally gave birth to our first raw food recipe book, RAWlicious. My newsletters have been few and far between with most of June and July being dedicated to the launch of the book both in Joburg and back home in Cape Town.

Just this weekend past, I was buying sprouts at the market and let slip to the lady standing next to me that I eat only raw foods and no animal products. She looked at me and honestly exclaimed that I was the first vegan-vegetarian she’d ever met that had a healthy glow and shining eyes. Need I say that the magic and the miracle is in the obvious… eating as close to nature as possible – eating RAW.

So now with RAWlicious out there on the shelves to inspire you whether you want to eat 10%, 50% or 100% raw, we are once again looking at how we can continue to support and add value to this wonderful emerging community of raw food eaters in Southern Africa.

CONVENIENCE

I hear this line all the time:
“If you just came and lived with me and made the food, I could eat like this.”

Fortunately or unfortunately there is just one of me, but we have been giving some consideration as to how to make raw foods more accessible and convenient for the busy city slicker. What we’ve realised is that there are a few select foods that make eating raw all the more enjoyable. These are generally the sweet treat foods or snack foods that tide people over from one meal to the next or really lift or complete a nice meal.

So, we’re getting into the kitchen and making scrumptious foods.
Every week we’ll be making something different such as:

biscuits
granola bars
raw nut butters
buckwheaties
buckwheat cereal etc

All these foods taste great, but take time to prepare or dehydrate, so we’ll be making them for you. We will email you weekly to let you know what’s been created and you’ll be able to order online.

CREDIT CARD FACILITIES

Our online Superfood Superstore went LIVE in May. Thank you to everyone who has been shopping and supporting this new virtual shop. We now have secure credit card facilities to make ordering and paying for your superfoods that much simpler.

CRISIS RELIEF

Fear not, the crisis is over!
The concerns that the love and passion had disappeared from our shores forever is over!
Yes, our 1 shipment of Cacao was delayed by several months and the shortfall has been felt over the last few weeks by many an ardent raw chocolate lover. Chocoholics can breathe a sigh of relief, Raw Cacao is back, so you can stock up and start chocolatiering again.

Oh and by the way, about this swine flu business. For those concerned about swine flu and swine flu vaccinations please educate yourself by reading this letter: http://vaccineactionletter.blogspot.com/

EXCITING NEW PRODUCTS
We’ve been gathering some new & tasty products and some useful tools for the health conscious kitchen.

KITCHEN GADGETS
Miron Glass Bottles
This is the best glass in the world for storing and energising food and liquids.
I got some in from Switzerland for myself and thought I better get in a few more
for when people ask where to got it from. Miron-Violet-Glass bottles are made
from a special purple glass which does not allow light from the visible spectrum to
penetrate(with the exception of violet radiation) but is transparent in the infrared
spectrum. Miron-Glass protects what you put in it against decomposition
so whether you’re storing your spring water, green juice or supplements in
there they stay fresh for longer.
And it really works – we left a glass of green juice on the windowsill and another
glass in miron glass and the miron bottle glass of juice was still green
and fresh 36 hours. Click here for more info and prices.
We have a variety of different sized bottled and jars but only
have a limited supply in stock.

Nut Milk Bags
I make use of nut milk bags in my kitchen to prepare smooth, creamy nut and
seed milks such as brazil nut milk, almond milk or sesame milk. Almond milk
is a great alternative to dairy for young children and adults alike.
See page 84 – 87 of RAWlicious for pictures and recipes on how to use
a nut milk bag. When I got mine in the UK it was nearly £10 for this simple bag,
so I’ve had a friend make them up locally for us and now we can sell them at
the much more reasonable price of R60. Click here for more info.

Spiralisers
I’ve been getting many people calling to ask “where do we get spiralisers
from so that we can make your delicious looking pasta recipes in the book?”
I found my spiraliser at Taste of Asia, but it cost me R950! Friends in the UK
are selling a different model that does the same thing for £30, so we have placed
an order for 200 spiralisers and the are en route from Germany.
They are due in at the end of this month, so if you hang on just a few more weeks,
you’ll be able to a spiraliser for half the price that you can get it for now.

FOODS & SUPERFOODS
Spirulina tablets
We have recently launched our own brand of locally sourced, outstanding quality
Spirulina both in powder and tablets. Spirulina contains a phenomenal
combination of protein, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, phytonutrients
and antioxidants. Many people find the taste of the powder off putting and tablets
are often prohibitive in price. We’ve bagged 333 tablets for just R90.
Remember if you are taking tablets you should take 10 – 20 tablets a day to get
an appreciable dose of Spirulina. Click here to go to the webshop for more info.

Agave nectar
We’ve also launched our own Soaring Free Superfoods Brand of Agave Nectar.
This is not a truly raw product being extracted at around 60°C. However, it is a
low glycaemic sweetener that can be used to replace nasty processed sugars, is
safe for diabetics and tastes fantastic in all manner of raw desserts because it
doesn’t have an overly strong flavour of it’s own, like honey or maple syrup.
We are having a special on Agave for the month of August, see the SPECIALS
section below for more info or click here to go to the webshop.

BOOKS
RAWlicious
If you haven’t yet bought your copy of RAWlicious, get with the times,
get your copy and start experimenting with raw recipes for radiant health!
Click here to go to the webshop for more info. To read what other people have
been saying about the book, click here to see the Urban Sprout review.

Rolene of New Beginnings
If you’ve been on our 2 day course you’ve probably heard me mention my friend from Botswana, Rolene who has healed herself of breast cancer through a combination of raw food cleansing as well as emotional, mental and spiritual cleansing too. Her journey and story is a true inspiration to all she meets. She’s a Journey therapist, De-Martini therapist, and Inspirational Speaker. Her and her husband run a successful business in Botswana, facilitating personal growth & empowerment workshops as well as employee wellness & teambuilding programs from an emotional intelligence and spiritual viewpoint. These workshops are interactive and process driven and a huge amount of fun. The exciting news is Rolene has moved to Cape Town! I am very excited to see her taking raw foods and emotional intelligence into the more mainstream and corporate sphere. She’s available to do talks, workshops and 1-1 sessions.
